Polar Solvents Training at the IFTC


The Intentional Fire Training Centre recently hosted a client to practice firefighting techniques with a polar solvent; in this instance, methanol.

The process operators witnessed at first hand how the fire is invisible except with the use of a TIC or other technology. Regular hydrocarbon foams won’t work on this kind of fuel so we used an alcohol resistant product as part of the course.

When you can’t actually see the fire but you witness how a combustible product tied to a pole ignites immediately when passing through the heat haze it makes for vivid learning and a great debrief on risk management and response. A great course for when firefighters operate in an environment where these products are used, stored or loaded. We’ve included some photographs of the training below.
